Muddle is the technique used with all drinks that call for crushed fresh fruit.
Place the fruit at the bottom of the glass with the sugar, if needed, and crush with the muddler or pestle until you get a uniform consistency. Then add the ice and the other ingredients and gently stir before serving.

In order to prevent the squirting or spurting out of the liquid that’s in the glass, first crush just the fresh fruit with the sugar (if called for), then add the other ingredients and the ice.
